CA translocates into the brain, increases the level of reduced glutathione in the body, and protects the brain from middle cerebral artery ischemia/reperfusion, suggesting that CA may be a new type of neuroprotective electrophilic compound.

Alzheimer's disease-carnosic acid (CA) is an effective antioxidant. Recent studies have shown that its electrophilic compounds play a role in reversing oxidative stress.

The pretreatment of carnosic acid in the lesion+CA group could reduce cell death in hippocampal horn 1 (CA1) compared with the lesion group.

Learning and memory-The current study evaluated two patented antioxidant ingredients, rosemary extract and spearmint extract containing carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, respectively, on the learning and memory of SAMP8 mice with accelerated aging model influences.

Two rosemary extracts contain carnosic acid (60% or 10% carnosic acid), and one peppermint extract contains 5% rosmarinic acid.

The current results show that the spearmint and rosemary extracts have beneficial effects on the learning and memory and brain tissue oxidation markers in SAMP8 mice.

Oxidative stress-We have previously demonstrated that carnosic acid (CA), present in rosemary extract, exerts a neuroprotective effect through the blood-brain barrier by up-regulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes through the Nrf2 transcription pathway.

CA may have potential clinical applications in diseases affecting the outer retina, including age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. Oxidative stress is considered to be part of the disease progression.

Anti-cancer-Rosemary extract is a potential candidate, including pre-determined doses in the anti-cancer diet to avoid toxicity.

Anti-angiogenesis-their growth inhibitory effects on proliferating endothelial cells and tumor cells may be at least partly due to the induction of apoptosis.

The anti-angiogenic activity of carnosyl and carnosic acid may contribute to the chemopreventive, anti-tumor and anti-metastatic activity of rosemary extract, and suggest their therapeutic potential in other angiogenesis-related malignancies.

Chemoprevention-the chemopreventive effect of carnosic acid may be due to its anti-lipid peroxidation effect and regulation of carcinogen detoxification enzymes in the process of dmba-induced oral carcinogenesis.
